I have two things on my mind today… Delaware and apples.
Or to be more specific, a state senator from Delaware, Stephanie Hansen, and the co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs.
I’ll get to Stephanie in a minute.
But first, Steve Jobs once gave a speech about the Six Best Doctors in the World.
According to him, they are:
- Sunlight
- Rest
- Exercise
- Diet
- Self-confidence
- Friends
As I think about this list, I can’t help but relate to it in terms of the holiday season. Because these are the first things we tend to give up when we are stressed out over our holiday hustle.
And giving these up creates a downward spiral that can take us under if we’re not careful.
So with that in mind, I’ve adapted Steve’s 6 Best Doctors in the world…Holiday 2018 style.
- Sunlight. Get outside! I know, it’s cold. But take a cue from these babies – fresh air is good for you.
- Rest. It’s powerful. Turn off the TV. Put down your phone. And that gift wrapping can wait till tomorrow. Commit to getting the rest you need and protect it at all costs.
- Exercise. Staying in your regular exercise routine will help you have the energy you need to tackle those holiday tasks. (And you can easily justify that extra gingerbread cookie if you’ll be working it off the next morning!)
- Diet. Speaking of that gingerbread cookie, it’s ok to indulge from time to time – just make sure the treat is worth it. (More on this in tomorrow’s podcast.) Most of your focus should be on getting GOOD FOOD IN, which will consist mostly of vegetables, grains, and healthy proteins. And don’t forget water – in addition to sleep and exercise, hydration is a key component to maintaining energy!
- Self-confidence. This is one we don’t typically lose until the holiday cards start to roll in. Remember – much like social media, these beautiful family photos are based on one golden moment in time, not everyday life. Let’s not compare the complexity of our behind-the-scenes reality to anyone else’s highlight reel.
- Friends. Sure, we might see friends during the holidays, but it tends to happen at big holiday gatherings crammed in between a multitude of work and family commitments. Why not find a little time one-on-one this month with someone who can get beyond “I love your dress!” or “Where did you get those shoes?”
So what does Stephanie Hansen, the Delaware senator have to do with this?
I’m glad you asked.
She was quoted in Self Magazine with this perspective-shifting gem that I want you to ponder:
“Self-care means taking good enough care of yourself that you can continue to perform at the highest level in service to others.” – Stephanie Hansen
Self care isn’t selfish, friends. It’s what ENABLES us to serve at the highest level.
So please, see those six doctors regularly this month and let’s make this season as magical as it’s meant to be!
