Sometimes when starting in a new job, position, or career, we have a tremendous temptation to jump in with both feet and try to prove ourselves to the world in the hope of being accepted by everyone.

Today’s show was inspired by a recent call with a woman in my signature coaching program who was caught in this trap. I helped her break down three common patterns we get into when we’re trying to prove ourselves, and I want to share them with you today. Then I’ll show you an alternative that may be better for both you and, ultimately, your organization.

    Someone at work recommended this podcast to me this week and I wanted to say thank you for doing this! I really enjoyed your podcast “Starting a new job? You don’t have to prove yourself. ” I wish I would have heard it before starting my current job. I can identify with these points, and honestly I am hitting the burnout point and seeing that this isn’t sustainable. I was wondering if you could provide some insight or tips on how to fix this in the case that there are those like me that I have already done the damage and are now realizing things need to change.

      Christina – Reset/renegotiate expectations now. This will require a clear and brave conversation with your leadership. Stick to the facts in that conversation (vs. how it’s making you feel). Outline what will change, by when, and why. Explain that you have the highest and best interests of the company in mind as you want to bring your best work to the top priorities. Ultimately it is up to each of us to be clear about how much work we can reasonably handle without fearing that it won’t be enough (or that someone else would/could handle more). So, speak your truth…and let that set you free!
