The Cure for YOUR Valentine’s Day Hangover

Well, HOW was your Valentine’s Day last week?

Did your partner make you feel utterly adored by showering you with flowers and gifts? Or was the proverbial ball completely dropped, and it left you feeling deeply unloved and unseen?

The pressure of this holiday each year can wreak havoc on relationships. It’s a game of expectations on both sides which, if unmet, can leave both parties feeling pretty lousy.

Do you want to know the dirty little secret about expectations?

That’s what we’re talking about today in the podcast. Scroll to the bottom if you want to listen.

But first, think about when you get in your car to run to the grocery store.

Your expectations for this trip probably include:

  1. You’ll drive to the store without getting stuck in traffic
  2. You won’t get in a fender bender
  3. You won’t have car mechanical issues
  4. All the items on your list will be in stock
  5. You’ll have the money to pay for your bill at the end

Now. THINK about all the times this goes right. That our expectations are met. How does it make us feel?

Do we skip into our house with our bags, completely ELATED about our experience?

Honestly. I wish I was that excited about groceries.

When our expectations are met, we are numb.

But what happens when even ONE of these expectations is unmet?

OMG. I’ll be so annoyed I can’t even stand it. Won’t you?

Because when there’s a gap between our expectation and our experience, then we feel.

It can go either way. One time I was in a restaurant with my family, and a man walking by laid a gift card on our table. It only had a few dollars on it after he paid his own bill, and he was sure he wouldn’t be back to use it, so wanted to pay it forward.

I mean – that was certainly not on my list of expectations for this meal.

It DELIGHTED me. Just the kindness behind it. Gestures like these make me feel all the warm and fuzzies inside.

So think about this in terms of your relationship.

Is your relationship really in need of some help, or do you just need to take a closer look at your list of expectations?
